Last night I went to see the fourth and final installment of ‘The Hunger Games.’  I know, SO EXCITING!  So you ask, what could possibly make this movie any more exciting?  Sneaking in homemade truffle popcorn of course!

I love snacking on popcorn, but movie theater popcorn is not good for you.  That’s more like sugar coating the situation, actually.  It’s bad for you!  One serving of AMC movie theater popcorn is 370 calories, 50% of which is fat.

I’m all about moderation so if movie theater popcorn is your thing, go for it! Enjoy the splurge and savor every little kernel. That being said, this stovetop popcorn is healthy, and best of all, customizable.  Below, I give a basic popcorn recipe, along with a few flavor options.  Try bringing this to your next movie!

Basic Stovetop Popcorn

 3 tbsp coconut oil

1/3 cup popcorn kernels

1 3-quart covered sauce pan

  1. Heat the 3 tsbp coconut oil in the sauce pan
  2. Put 3-4 kernels in the oil and wait for them to pop
  3. Once popped, add the rest of the 1/3 cup popcorn kernels in an even layer
  4. Cover and remove from the heat for 30-seconds
  5. Return to the heat and shake gently while the popcorn kernels pop.  Should take about 3 minutes
  6. When popping slows remove the pan from the heat
  7. After 1 minute remove the lid from the pot and transfer popcorn to a mixing bowl
  8. Add seasoning (recipe combos below) and mix to combine

Truffle Thyme Popcorn

2 tbsp melted ghee

1 tbsp finely chopped fresh thyme

truffle salt to taste

Kettle corn

salt to taste
